Cleadon Church of England Academy

Flourishing together as one

Rainbow Flag Award

We are delighted to announce that we have received the Rainbow Flag Award. To obtain the award we had to submit evidence of: skilled teachers, supportive governors and parents, effective ploicies, inclusive curriculum, pastoral support and pupil voice. Cleadon Church of England was graded outstanding in all areas! Scroll down to read more about our journey.

In the Autumn term 2017, Cleadon Church of England Academy was one of 200 schools across the country who applied to work towards achieving “The Rainbow Flag Award.” After initial training and reflection, we were one of the 100 schools who were selected to be taken forward to receive training and support.

The Rainbow Flag Award is a quality assurance framework for schools, primary and secondary. Through a process of self-assessment and ongoing monitoring and feedback, schools will determine how well they are providing safe and supportive environments for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) students, taking a whole school approach.

The award focuses on the six key areas below:

As a staff we have been working together to purchase resources and develop our approach. As a school, we strongly believe that we have a moral duty to ensure that we promote equality for all and that we challenge any HBT bullying that occurs in any form. This is supported in law by the 2010 Equalities Act.

If you require any further information, or support, then please see the links below or contact Mr Scott or Miss Merrin in school.

We held a Coffee Afternoon for parents and carers. It gave people the chance to talk to Lewis and Jo from LGBT D.I.S.C (developing initiative supporting communities) which is a children's well-being organisation. The event also gave parents and carers the chance to look at some of our resources. As a staff we are also taking part in on-going training.

In June some of our Year 5 and 6 children took part in their Rainbow Flag Award training.

Our staff completed the second part of their training in October.

Our Year 5 and 6 children have created some wonderful posters to show awareness of LGBT and the imprrtance of challenging HBT bullying.

Rainbow Flag Day

In June we had our Rainbow Flag Day. Each Year group based their activities on a chosen text and used this to take part in a range of discussions and activities.
